"We want Sakura Novi to be a place where the community can discover new flavors, gather with family and friends, and experience the many facets of Asian culture," Scott Aikens, owner of Sakura Novi, told DBusiness when Sumo Japanese Grill opened there this September.
With Sumo open, every business on the development's partner roster is now operating. If you've been driving past the cherry-tree boulevard on Grand River and waiting until the place was finished, it is finished. One planning detail remains. The eight storefronts keep very different hours. The bakery opens before sunrise and the Korean steakhouse doesn't open until late afternoon. Based on posted and reported hours, all eight are open at the same time for about four hours on most days, and not at all on Mondays.
How the Roster Filled In
The development took more than a year to fill. Robert B. Aikens & Associates and Robertson Homes built it as an 18-acre campus with a Japanese-inspired garden at its center. Hour Detroit put the construction cost at roughly $55 million. The businesses opened in this order:
- Klawsome!, Michigan's first stand-alone claw-machine arcade, was the first retail tenant announced and opened in August 2025.
- Paris Baguette soft-opened October 8, 2025. Its grand opening on October 23 was also the dedication day for Sakura Gardens, with taiko drumming.
- Chubby Cattle Wagyu Shabu House, the chain's first Michigan location, opened November 6, 2025.
- BOOKOFF, the Japanese secondhand chain, opened February 26, 2026.
- TESO Life and Cloud Boba both opened May 15, 2026. TESO Life was the chain's first Michigan store.
- The Dancing Pine, the Korean steakhouse anchor at 42768 Grand River Ave., was open by mid-June 2026.
- Sumo Japanese Grill at 42658 Grand River Ave. was open by early September 2026.
Klarnz Skincare, a Korean and Asian beauty shop, appeared on the development's tenant list in coverage from this summer. We couldn't confirm that it has opened.
Because the businesses opened in waves, most opening-day coverage looked at one business at a time. No single article lays out how their schedules fit together, which matters most if you're planning a visit.
The Schedules Side by Side
These are the most recent hours we could find for each business. Some come from the businesses' own sites. Others come from local news coverage at opening time, and the table notes those dates.
| Business | What it is | Hours | Source date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paris Baguette | Bakery-café | 6 a.m.–10 p.m. daily | October 2025 report |
| BOOKOFF | Used books, games, music | 10 a.m.–8 p.m., seven days | Store page |
| Cloud Boba | Bubble tea | Tue–Thu 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 10 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–9 p.m., closed Mon | May 2026 report |
| TESO Life | Japanese-themed department store | 11 a.m.–9 p.m. daily | May 2026 report |
| Klawsome! | Claw-machine arcade | Tue–Sun 11 a.m.–9 p.m., closed Mon | Arcade's site |
| Sumo Japanese Grill | Quick-service hibachi | Mon–Sat 11:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m., Sun 11:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m. | Restaurant's site |
| Chubby Cattle | All-you-can-eat wagyu hot pot | Sun–Thu noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–10:30 p.m. | Location page |
| The Dancing Pine | Korean steakhouse | Tue–Sun 4–10 p.m. | July 2026 report |
The overlap is small. The Dancing Pine opens at 4 p.m., and BOOKOFF closes at 8. From Tuesday through Saturday, 4 to 8 p.m. is the only stretch when all eight businesses are open. On Sunday, Sumo closes at 6:30, so the window shrinks to two and a half hours. On Monday it never happens, because Klawsome! and Cloud Boba are closed and the latest published hours for The Dancing Pine don't list Monday.
Outside that window, you're visiting a different version of the district.
Before 10 a.m., the Bakery Has the Block to Itself
If the October 2025 hours still hold, Paris Baguette opens about four hours before anything else. That makes it the only morning option on the property. Hometown Life's opening coverage listed croissants, scones, doughnuts, tarts, cakes, pizza, coffee and tea. Since those hours are almost a year old, check before planning a 6 a.m. stop.
The other early draw is the outdoor space. Sakura Gardens covers two acres, with a landscaped pond, walking paths, cherry blossom gardens, a playground and a public plaza for community events. According to the developer, the path loops around the water and continues down a cherry-tree-lined boulevard toward the residential commons. Hour Detroit reported that the garden is open to the public. We couldn't find posted garden hours or specific parking rules. BOOKOFF's store page confirms parking at the site. The cherry trees are a spring feature. In October, you're there for the pond loop and the playground.
Late Morning Through Midafternoon, the Retail Side Is in Charge
By 11 a.m., the shopping side of Sakura Novi is open. This stretch costs the least for a visit and works best for families.
BOOKOFF opens first, at 10. Hometown Life reported more than 40,000 used books, vinyl records, CDs, DVDs, games, manga and anime items. Books averaged $5 to $9, and some clearance fiction started at $1. The store also pays cash on the spot for trade-ins it accepts, with offers based on condition and current inventory. If you have a box of games or manga at home, bring it in the morning and take the cash next door.
TESO Life carries beauty products, snacks, drinks and household goods. Its opening coverage singled out blind-box collectibles such as Smiski and Care Bears, Rolife DIY kits, and Asian snacks and frozen desserts.
Klawsome! sells tokens in bundles, and the bonus grows as you spend more:
- $10 for 10 tokens
- $30 for 30 tokens plus 5 bonus
- $50 for 50 tokens plus 10 bonus
- $100 for 100 tokens plus 25 bonus
- $250 for 250 tokens plus 75 bonus
The arcade's site doesn't say how many tokens each machine takes, so a $10 bundle doesn't tell you how many plays you'll get.
Cloud Boba opens at 11 on most days and at 10 on Friday and Saturday. The shop advertises more than 100 drink combinations, including crème brûlée milk tea, honey-lavender matcha, Vietnamese coffee and fresh-squeezed lemonade.
For lunch, Sumo Japanese Grill is the quick option. Its 1,403-square-foot space serves hibachi chicken, signature fried rice, noodles and house-made sauces. Sumo also has the earliest closing time of any restaurant on the property: 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. Plan it for lunch or an early dinner.
After 4 p.m., It Turns Into a Dinner Destination
Once The Dancing Pine opens, Sakura Novi has its two most expensive meals running at the same time. They work very differently, which affects how you plan.
Chubby Cattle is walk-in only. Priority seating is limited to holders of its NFT membership. When it opened in November 2025, the restaurant published three all-you-can-eat tiers: $48, $58 and $78 per person. The base tier included American and Australian wagyu, sushi and seafood. The higher tiers added Japanese A5 wagyu, tartare, bone marrow and premium cuts. Diners get 90 minutes at the table. Those prices are almost a year old, so confirm them before you go. The restaurant's current page lists a noon opening, earlier than the 5 p.m. start in its launch announcement. That makes a midafternoon visit before the dinner crowd an option worth calling about.
The Dancing Pine takes reservations through OpenTable, linked from its website. Its menu mixes à la carte dishes with shareable sets. Oysters are $7 or $18, the Dancing Pine sets are $140 or $250, and the Emperor's Chest is $189 or $320. Metro Times and The Detroit News mentioned caviar, wagyu steaks, kimchi stew, house-made banchan and tableside cooking.
So one dinner can be booked ahead and the other can't. If you want both options open, a Dancing Pine reservation is the safer choice on a Friday. Chubby Cattle suits nights when you can wait for a table. After 9 p.m., Klawsome!, TESO Life and Cloud Boba close on most nights, and the district comes down to the two dinner spots and the bakery.
Sundays and Mondays Have Their Own Gaps
The two days at either end of the week cause most of the planning trouble.
On Sunday, every business is open, but Sumo closes at 6:30 p.m. That leaves 4 to 6:30 as the only time you can browse BOOKOFF, grab a Cloud Boba and still choose among all three restaurants.
On Monday, Klawsome! and Cloud Boba are closed. The Dancing Pine's latest published hours run Tuesday through Sunday and don't mention Monday, so call before planning a Monday dinner there. Monday is still a good day for BOOKOFF, TESO Life, a Sumo lunch or an all-you-can-eat dinner at Chubby Cattle. It's just not the day to bring kids hoping for the claw machines.
If you're shopping for groceries rather than dining, One World Market is a separate business nearby at 42705 Grand River. It's a Japanese grocery and sushi market that has been on Grand River for more than 20 years, so it predates Sakura Novi entirely.
We found no fall 2026 festival, night market or seasonal event announced for the plaza. Sakura Gardens was dedicated on October 23, 2025, so this month marks its first anniversary. For now, the best way to see the whole development is to arrive on a weekday between 4 and 8 p.m. All eight doors are open then, and an early arrival leaves time for a lap around the pond.
Hours like these are the kind of detail Dan Fortin keeps track of across Novi and the surrounding communities, alongside the larger questions about where to live. If you have a question about this part of Grand River or anything else in town, Let's Connect.
